How to Move to Australia Without a Job Offer
Think you need a job offer to move to Australia? Think again!
Australia’s skilled migration program offers pathways for qualified professionals to move permanently, even without a job offer lined up. If you have experience and qualifications in an occupation that’s in demand, you may be eligible for a visa based on your skills, qualifications, and points score.

Visa Pathways That Don’t Require a Job Offer
1. Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)
The Skilled Independent Visa (Sc 189) leads to Permanent residency in Australia. You do not need employer or state sponsorship. This visa category is points-tested and requires a minimum of 65 points. Your occupation must be on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List)
It is therefore suitable for highly qualified individuals with strong English and work experience.
2. State Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
The State Nominated Visa (Sc 190) leads to Permanent residency. It requires state or territory nomination and you have higher chances of selection if your occupation is on the state’s priority list. This would add 5 points to your points test score. Once approved, you will need to show commitment to living and working in that state for at least 2 years
3. Skilled Work Regional Visa (Subclass 491)
The Skilled Work Regional Visa (Sc 491) is a provisional visa (5 years) with a pathway to permanent residency (Subclass 191). It requires state nomination or family sponsorship in regional Australia, which adds 15 points to your points test score. Once approved, you must live and work in a designated regional area.
Who are these pathways for?
These visa options are ideal if you don’t have a job offer, but…
- You have qualifications and work experience in a high-demand occupation
- You meet English language requirements
- You’re willing to live in regional areas (for 491) or nominated states (for 190)
How Does the Points System Work?
To qualify for these visas, you’ll be assessed on a points-based system considering:
- Age (max points for 25–32)
- English proficiency (IELTS 7+ or equivalent)
- Qualifications (Trade, Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD)
- Skilled employment (in and outside Australia)
- Partner skills, study in Australia, NAATI, etc.
