What is a Working Holiday visa for Australia?
The Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417) and Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) are programs that allow young people from eligible countries to travel to Australia for an extended holiday and work during their stay. These visas are designed to promote cultural exchange and closer ties between Australia and participating countries.
Who is eligible for a Working Holiday visa?
You must be between 18 and 30 years old (35 for Canadian, French, and Irish citizens for subclass 417) and hold a passport from an eligible country (the list of eligible countries may vary depending on the subclass). There are financial requirements: you must also have sufficient funds to support you during your stay, and purchase onward travel.
You must also be healthy and of good character.
What can I do on an Australian Working Holiday visa?
You can stay in Australia for up to 12 months. Within that stay ou can leave and re-enter Australia multiple times but the 12 months period starts upon arrival in Australia and time spent outside the country after your first entry does not extend the visa's 12-month period of stay. You may work throughout your stay but up to 6 months for any given employer. You may also study for up to 4 months.
If you work at least 3 months in certain industries, you may seek a second Working Holiday Visa.
Can I include family?
You cannot include family/relatives in this visa and you cannot be accompanied by dependent children.
Can I extend my stay?
You may apply for a different visa category at the end of your WHV, but if you want to apply for a Visitor visa to stay longer in Australia and the Visitor visa would result in you staying longer than 12 consecutive months in Australia, you must show there are exceptional circumstances.
