Sc 870 Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa allows parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizen to stay in Australia for a period of 3 or 5 years with the maximum cumulative stay of 10 years.

The Subclass 870 Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa allows parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizen to stay in Australia for a period of 3 or 5 years with the maximum cumulative stay of 10 years.
This visa does not have working rights and does not lead to permanent residency.
An annual quota of 15,000
Sc 870 visa is subject to a cap of 15 000 places per program year – if the cap is reached, no further visas will be granted until the next program year start on 1st July.
What are the details of the Temporary Parent visa (Sc 870)?
Holders of Sc 870 visa can:
- reunite with their children in Australia
- visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years per visa
- apply for further Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visas to visit up to a maximum period of 10 years in Australia
What do I need to be eligible for a Temporary Parent visa?
General criteria for Parents (applicants)
- You must have an approved sponsor and be either biological, or adoptive, or stepparent of the sponsor. If applying as a stepparent, you must still be in a married/de facto relationship with a biological parent of the sponsor
- You must genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily
- You must be outside Australia for at least 90 days if you hold or have previously held Sc 870 visa
- You must have sufficient funds to support yourself while in Australia
- You must arrange and maintain health insurance unless your country has a reciprocal healthcare agreement with Australia.
- You must have no debt to Australian government, including public health debt
- Each applicant for this visa must satisfy health and character requirements. All applicants over 16 must provide police clearances from every country they lived in, Australia inclusive, for at least 12 months in the past 10 years.
General criteria for sponsors
- Age – you must be 18 years old or older
- Be an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident usually resident in Australia for at least 4 years or an eligible New Zealand citizen usually resident in Australia for at least 4 years
- Have not been unlawful or held a bridging visa (other than a bridging visa A, B or C) during the last 4 years
- Have a taxable income for the most recent completed taxable income year immediately before the date of sponsorship application submission of at least AUD$83,454.80 (can be combined but the sponsor must be able to demonstrate at least 50% of the required amount)
- Meet character requirements – provide police clearances for any country the sponsor has spent more than 12 months, whether cumulatively or in one stay, during the last 10 years
- Pay the sponsorship fee
- Sponsor no more than 2 parents at a time per household
- Agree to provide support, housing and financial help to the applicant/s while they are in Australia
Can I include my family in a Temporary Parent visa application?
You cannot include family members in your visa application. If both parents are applying for this visa each needs to submit an individual Subclass 870 visa application.
How long does it take to get a Temporary Parent visa for Australia?
The current processing times are 5-6 months from the date of visa application submission.
What are the costs involved?
First Instalment payable on application submission: AUD$1,020 per parent (if both parents are applying each needs to submit their own Sc 870 visa application).
Second Instalment payable once requested by DHA and before the visa grant: AUD$4,070 per parent if applying for a 3-year visa and AUD$9,160 per parent if applying for a 5-year visa.
The sponsorship application fee is AU$420.
