How to write a cover letter

Address it to the right person

Do some research and try to find out who will be reading your cover letter. Address it to them directly, using their name and the correct title.

Use the first paragraph to grab the reader’s attention and explain why you’re interested in the job. Highlight your relevant skills and experience and explain what you can bring to the role.

Tailor it to the job

Make sure your cover letter is specific to the job you’re applying for. Explain why you’re a good fit for the role and why you’re interested in working for that particular company.

Use specific examples

Use specific examples to demonstrate your skills and experience. This could be a particular project you worked on or a time when you demonstrated a particular skill.

Keep it concise

Your cover letter should be no longer than one page. Make sure each sentence is relevant and adds value.

Show your personality!

Your cover letter is a chance to showcase your personality and demonstrate why you’re a good fit for the company culture. Be professional but also let your personality shine through.

Close with a strong call to action

Use the final paragraph to reiterate your interest in the job and ask for the opportunity to discuss your application further. Include your contact information and thank the reader for their time.

Proofread and edit

Make sure your cover letter is free of errors, typos, and grammatical mistakes.  Ask someone else to read it over as well, as a fresh set of eyes can often catch things you may have missed.
